Verena Schaukal

Advertising manipulates human perception – Verena Schaukal does not accept that reproach: She manipulates back! In one of her video animations she transforms the lovely idyllic scene on a cheese packing into a tumultuous scenery of war. Thus foiling the advertiser’s message and the spontaneous perception of the viewer (respectable the consumer). Other works of Schaukal take a less spectacular transformation and demonstrate that moralizing is not Schaukal`s primary concern. Nevertheless these works are equally impressive proofs of her masterful handling of the medium of video animation. Her recent photo works are also considerably manipulative. They seem to give insight into the artist`s life which seems to be full of travels and journeys. In fact they are just skillfully realized compositions of poster-scenery and reality. Schaukal`s works are humorous, ironical and sometimes grotesque starting points of critical reflections on advertising messages and consumer behaviour.
