Johannes Braig

Colourful - such is Johannes Braig`s world of pictures. It is full of strong tint mixed together to wild collages, friendly shining backgrounds and multi-coloured figures. This is not the work of an artist who sees himself as a critic of our time and society, but of a painter who strives for expressive aesthetics. Subtle irony is prominent in Braig´s work, particularly in his text paintings. Braig seems to love to pull the art enterprise`s leg. A typical Braig work aims at the often understanding-free relationship of public and modern artist: "I never said you couldn’t paint that as well!", explains Braig looking at one of his pictures which displays arbitrary colour blots – only to ask with hypocritical provocation: "However, why should you?"

born 1967 in Ehingen, grown up in Ravensburg (Germany)

studies of art with Professor Leiko Ikemura, university of arts Berlin (starting from 1990)

stipend to the École national Supérieure of Beaux Arts Paris with Prof. Annette Messager (1994)
