Wilhelm Beestermoeller
Wilhelm Beestermoeller`s portrait series deliver documents of an occupation: Instead of faces,
all you can see are coloured, roundish spots which claim to be the center of the picture.
They attract the attention of the viewer and thereby hide the central statement of the picture.
The portraits` charm comes from what cannot be seen, but must be imagined. In other photo-paintings
likewise, coloured spots appear in the foreground. However, in contrast to the portait series
it remains a mystery what they cover: They might hide exciting details – or they might not.
To design the spots, Beestermoeller uses a computer. The spots’ pleasant roundness results
from the limited capabilities of drawing with a mouse, as well as the algorithmic laws applied
by the software Beestermoeller uses. The spots’ shapes do not follow specific patterns and
their design is independent of their later usage in the photo-paintings. Beestermoeller designs
them in a seperate process. He then uses them later as components of his works.
